Essen Special Second Podcast Episode

by Karl Bunyan on October 25th, 2011 at 6:04 pm
Posted In: Podcasts

We gave you one Essen special episode, and now we’re spoiling you with a second one. We run through the last two days of the fantastic Spiel show and talk about some more of the game purchases and plays including Mage Knight, the sold-out Panic Station and Power Grid: First Sparks. We also announce the winner of our competition to win a game from the show.

You can listen to the second of our Essen special episodes below or download it here.

Note that we recorded the episode whilst travelling on the cross-channel ferry from Calais to Dover so the sound quality is not up to our usual regal standards. The content is as top-notch as ever, of course.

Essen Special Podcast Episode

by Karl Bunyan on October 21st, 2011 at 9:56 pm
Posted In: Podcasts

The Royal Society has made it to Essen and have put together a special podcast episode from this fantastic game fair. With a more informal format than usual, we discuss our impressions of the show, some of the games that seem to be generating buzz or selling out, some of the games we’ve played or bought, and our opinions on hot new releases such as Risk: Legacy (or Risiko Evolution, as it is in German) and Donald X Vaccarino’s new game Kingdom Builder.

You can listen to the episode below or download it here.

Off to Essen and some steamy punk love . . .

by henrik on October 19th, 2011 at 8:30 am

So, here we are, on the brink of joining forces with some other geeks and travelling down to Essen, we are pretty excited (oh yeah!) and are looking forward to a weekend of games and some of us are also looking forward to German beer (no names mentioned). Look out for some sporadic updates on this site where we will tell you of our experiences, games we played, people we met and natives we encountered. There is still time to enter the contest yet, we have not picked the winner so far, so be quick and vigilant and you might be the lucky winner of a spanking new Essen game !

On a rather different note, somebody pointed out to me – in response to my complaint about the lack of Steampunk games out there – that there are indeed a handful of Steampunk games on the market worth our attention, so without further ado, here is an interesting link to a list of Steampunk games for all you fans of Zeppelins and Jules Verne . .  Steampunk Board Games

So long, The Royals

Last Night on Earth Used In World Record

by Karl Bunyan on August 30th, 2011 at 11:22 am
Posted In: News

Five gamers wanting to set the world record for the longest board game session chose Last Night on Earth for their 48 hour session. We reviewed the game in episode 5, but we only played it for an hour. You may be pleased to know that the 48 record wasn’t made up of just a single play as that might be something that would test even Henrik’s love of the game. Conrad would probably choose a different game for the record attempt, but possibly a visit from one of the characters in the game, as happened in the Oklahoma-set record, might be enough to tempt him… as long as it’s Jenny.

Update 31/08/11: Apparerently the final time was 51 hours 7 minutes. Thanks to Chad Thriftington III for letting us know on our BGG blog!
